Farms, minerals and a push into technology

Kwara lies in the west of Nigeria, governed from Ilorin, with 16 local government areas and a long border with Benin. It is the ninth largest state by area but one of the least populous, with the Niger along its northern edge. The Yoruba form the majority, with Nupe, Bariba and Fulani communities too. Its north-western corner holds part of Kainji National Park, and a slice of Old Oyo National Park lies in the south-west.

Farming earns the state most of its income. Cocoa, cotton, tobacco, coffee, sesame, kola nut and palm produce are the main cash crops, and Shonga Farms brings together a group of commercial farmers. The ground holds petroleum, gold, limestone, marble, kaolin and granite, much of it around Omuaran.

The state is also working to grow technology and innovation, with an Ilorin initiative that supports start-ups and builds skills. For a young tech firm, a farm business or a mineral supplier, a website is often how investors, partners and customers first meet you, so it has to be clear, credible and fast.
