Akron grew from a settlement founded in 1825 where the Ohio and Erie Canal crossed its summit, which explains a name taken from the Greek word for summit. Later, Goodyear, Firestone, Goodrich and General Tire earned it a famous nickname: Rubber Capital of the World. Today the Summit County seat is one of Ohio's larger cities, at the heart of a sizeable metro about 40 miles south of Cleveland.
The rubber legacy evolved into Polymer Valley, centered on Akron and holding forty-five percent of Ohio's polymer industries; by the start of this century, hundreds of companies in the region made polymer-based materials. The University of Akron set up the first college devoted to polymer science and engineering, and the National Polymer Innovation Center followed on campus in 2010.
