An independent town in the Five Valleys
Stroud is a Gloucestershire market town, home to about 13,500 people in 2021, set below the Cotswold escarpment where five valleys meet. Gloucester is 10 miles north, Cheltenham 14 miles away and Bristol 26 miles to the south-west. The Sunday Times, in March 2021, singled it out as a fine UK town to live in, praising its green spaces and independent character.
The town is a commercial centre for a ring of villages and smaller towns, such as Painswick, Nailsworth and Minchinhampton. The Cotswold Way passes just west of it. Its economy has a green and creative streak: renewable energy company Ecotricity has its headquarters here, Damien Hirst's Science studio produces his art in the town, and in 2009 a co-operative launched the Stroud Pound to keep spending close to home.
