Scunthorpe is the administrative centre of North Lincolnshire and, with 81,286 residents in 2021, the county's third-largest settlement after Lincoln and Grimsby. Doncaster lies to the west and Hull to the north-east across the Humber Bridge.
Steel made the town. Ironstone found nearby in the mid-19th century, then a railway in the 1860s, turned farmland into an iron and steel centre. The works passed through British Steel, Corus and Tata Steel Europe before Greybull Capital bought the long products division in 2016, with Scunthorpe as its main production site. Metal engineering and a BOC plant grew up alongside.

Food is a big employer: 2 Sisters Food Group processes chicken here, Key Country Foods and The Sauce Company supply caterers and supermarkets, and the old Riley's Crisps factory makes Golden Wonder. On Foxhills Industrial Park, Nisa has its UK headquarters and Wren Kitchens runs a factory of 500,000 square feet. Circuit boards for telecoms are made by Ericsson Mobile Platforms, and many smaller firms work in manufacturing and light engineering.
