From cotton capital to a mixed modern economy
Oldham sits high among the Pennines between the Irk and the Medlock, 7 miles north-east of Manchester city centre. The wider borough had 242,003 residents in 2021. In the 19th century this was a cotton boomtown: at its peak its mills outspun France and Germany combined.
