Salt, chemicals and a market town
Northwich is a Cheshire market town where the Weaver meets the Dane, 18 miles east of Chester and 19 miles south of Manchester. The parish had 22,726 residents at the 2021 census. The Romans worked salt pans here, and salt shaped the town for centuries, along with the subsidence that came with mining until stabilisation work finished in 2007.
Salt led to chemicals. ICI's three works stood at Lostock, Wallerscote and Winnington, and the Winnington Laboratory produced the first industrially practical polythene in 1933. Trade was always broader than one product: a toll list from 1353 records cloth, fish, dairy goods, metals and building materials crossing the bridge. Food is part of the story too. Frank Roberts & Sons, bakers tied to the town since 1887, sit at Rudheath on the A556, with The Little Treats Co and Roberts Bakery both in Northwich. Rudheath and Hartford are also home to many sizeable employers. A market has run since at least 1535 and is due a refresh under the Northwich Vision plans.
