A shoemaking town that now runs on distribution
Northamptonshire's county town stands on the River Nene, about 60 miles from London and 50 miles from Birmingham. Its urban area counted 249,093 people in 2021, which makes it one of England's largest settlements without city status, despite four bids for it.
For centuries the town was known for footwear and leather. Specialist names such as Church's, Crockett & Jones, Tricker's and Barker Shoes still make shoes, and many old factories have become offices and flats. Engineering grew after the war, but today distribution and finance lead private employment, with Barclaycard, Avon Products, Travis Perkins, Panasonic and National Grid among the employers. Carlsberg opened its first brewery outside Denmark here in 1974, and St Andrew's Healthcare runs the UK's largest psychiatric hospital in the town. The University of Northampton is another large employer, and the town's output runs to billions of pounds a year.
