Lying immediately north of Abuja, Suleja is a Niger State city that also gives its name to a council area. It used the name Abuja itself until 1976, when the federal government chose that name for its new capital, and people still mix the two up. The town dates from the early 19th century, when Mohammed Makau, who had ruled Zaria as its final Hausa emir, settled here with his followers.
Craft runs through its identity. Michael Cardew started the Ladi Kwali Pottery Centre here in 1950, and Gbari pottery is still sent out from the town. Weaving, dyeing with home-grown indigo and mat making continue, though farming remains the main work. Residents are served by a hospital, a state secondary school and a campus of Dorben Polytechnic, and a new university was approved in August 2025.
