Farming, food processing and Yankari

Bauchi State, in the north-east, takes its name from its capital city. It came into being in 1976 and lost its eastern part when Gombe became a separate state in 1996. Among the 36 states it is fifth in both size and population, stretching from savanna in the south to drier Sahelian country in the north.

Agriculture leads. Herders raise livestock, and farmers grow yams, millet, cotton, tomatoes and groundnuts, helped by irrigation schemes that have lifted output since the state was created. Food processing and canning add value to that harvest, while tin and columbite are mined. Tourism centres on Yankari National Park, with its Wikki Warm Springs and some of the last lions and elephants left in Nigeria.

Each of these trades has a buyer who checks online: a distributor sizing up a food processor, a partner looking for mining experience, a visitor planning a trip to the park. Our job is to give them clear answers quickly, on any screen, and to make the next step obvious.
