Newfoundland and Labrador joined Canada in 1949, the tenth province and the latest to do so. It pairs the island of Newfoundland with mainland Labrador, and had 552,462 people in 2026. The island holds nearly all of them, more than half on the Avalon Peninsula, and a large share of the province lives in and around St. John's, the capital.
The economy turned around after the cod fishery collapsed in the early 1990s. Offshore platforms pump oil from the Grand Banks at Terra Nova, Hibernia and White Rose; mines at Wabush, Labrador City and Voisey's Bay supply iron ore and nickel, and much of Canada's iron ore comes from here. Fishing still employs thousands of people, and visitors come mostly between June and September.
